Angela Bassett was born on August 16, 1958 in New York City and grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida. She studied drama at Yale University.

Angela started out in tv shows such as "Spenser: For Hire," "The Cosby Show," "A Man Called Hawk" and "Alien Nation." She eventually moved on to films.

Angela made her feature film debut in "F/X." She was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award, won the Best Actress Golden Globe Award and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a motion picture for her performance in "What's Love Got To Do With It."

Angela has gone on to appear in such films as "Strange Days," "Waiting to Exhale," "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," "Sunshine State," "Akeelah & The Bee" and "Notorious."

Angela has been married to actor Courtney B. Vance since 1997. They are the parents of twins Bronwyn and Slater.
