One of the most highly respected black actresses, the Emmy Award winning and Academy Award nominee Cicely Tyson was born on December 19, 1933 in New York City. She was raised in Harlem by her Caribbean born parents and is one of 3 children. After graduation from high school she went into modeling, becoming one of the top 10 black models in the U.S.

Cicely's appeared in Off Broadway productions such as "The Dark of the Moon," "The Spectrum," "The Blacks" and "The Cool World."

Cicely was a regular in the daytime drama "The Guiding Light" and "East Side/WestSide." She's made guest appearances on such tv shows as "Naked City," "I Spy," "Medical Center," "Gunsmoke" and "Touched By An Angel." Cicely has also appeared in numerous television movies including "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman"(an Emmy winning performance), "Roots," "A Woman Called Moses," "The Marva Collins Story," "Mama Flora's Family" and "A Lesson Before Dying."

Cicely has appeared in such feature films as "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter," "Sounder"(for which she earned an Academy Award Best Actress nomination), "Bustin Loose" and "Fried Green Tomatoes."

Cicely is a cofounder of the Dance Theater of Harlem and has a school named after her, The Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts, in East Orange, New Jersey.

Cicely was married to the late jazz trumpeter Miles Davis from 1981 to 1988.
