A native of Los Angeles, California, Paula Patton attended Hamilton High School for the Performing Arts. A year before her senior year of high school she attended the USC film school for the summer program where she made a couple of short films. She also appeared in the PBS show "The Ride" which took four young filmmakers across the country and make documentaries about other young people throughout America. After graduating from Hamilton she attended UC Berkeley. She would eventually transfer to the USC Film School where she graduated magna cum laude.

After her college graduation she worked as a production assistant and she worked in documentaries including "Medical Diaries" for Discovery Health Network.

After taking acting lessons Paula made her feature film debut in "Hitch." She also starred in "London," "Idlewild" and "Déjà Vu."

In 2005 Paula married R&B singer Robin Thicke, the son of actor Alan Thicke.
