S. Epatha Merkerson was born Sharon Epatha Merkerson on November 28, 1952 in Saginaw, MI and she moved with her family to Detroit. Epatha earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Wayne State University.

Epatha’s on and off Broadway stage credits include "The Piano Lesson," "I’m Not Stupid" and "The Old Settler." She’s been nominated for Tony and Drama Desk Awards and she’s an Obie Award winner.

Epatha’s film credits include "Navy Seals," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Jacob’s Ladder" and "Radio." She’s appeared in numerous televison films but she’s best known for her role as Lt. Anita Van Buren in the hit tv series "Law & Order." She’s also guest starred in such tv shows as "The Cosby Show," "Frasier" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." Before her stint on "Law & Order" Epatha starred in "Pee_Wee’s Playhouse," "Mann & Machine" and "Here & Now."

A former 3 pack a day smoker for 23 years Epatha is now an outspoken advocate against smoking. Epatha recently divorced her husband Toussaint L. Jones. They had been married since 1994.
