Sheryl Lee Ralph was born in Waterbury, CT on December 30, 1956. The daughter of a teacher and clothing designer who were from Jamaica, Sheryl won a scholarship to Rutgers University where she graduated with a degree in English Literature and Theater.

In 1981 Sheryl won the role of Deena Jones in the Broadway musical "Dreamgirls." This role earned her a Tony nomination. Even though "Dreamgirls" was a success she found it difficult to land decent roles in Hollywood.

She has guest starred in such tv shows as "The Jeffersons," "Hunter," "L.A. Law," "Falcon Crest," "Las Vegas," "The Parkers," "Whoopi" and "Amazing Stories." She had a recurring role in "The District" and "Barbershop." Sheryl was a series regular in "Code Name: Foxfire," "Itís A Living," "New Attitude," "Designing Women," "George," the hit UPN series "Moesha," and the daytime drama "Search For Tomorrow."

Sheryl made her film debut in "A Piece of The Action." She would later star in "The Mighty Quinn," "To Sleep With Anger," "Mistress" and "Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit."

In 1990 Sheryl married art dealer Eric Maurice. They have two children, Etienne and Ivy-Victoria. Eric and Sheryl divorced in 2000. On July 30, 2005 Sheryl married Pennsylvania state senator Vincent Hughes.
