Valarie Pettiford was born in Queens, New York on July 8, 1960. Valarie has a younger sister Antonia, an actress. She began her training at the Bernice Johnson Theater for the Performing Arts in Queens. By the age of 14, she was a teacher and choreographer for the school and became one of the lead dancers in the company. She also attended the Performing Arts High School.

Valarie has enjoyed a remarkable career on stage, film and television, culminating in her outstanding performance on Broadway in "Fosse," which earned her a nomination for a Tony, Grammy, Outer Critics Circle and the Dora Mayor Moore Awards as well as being recognized by Drama-Logue. Her Broadway and national tour credits include "Chicago" in London's West End as Velma opposite Chita Rivera, Bob Fosse's national tour of "Dancin'," "Big Deal" for Hal Prince on Broadway, "Grind" on Broadway, and the first national tour of "Showboat" as Julie, a performance which earned her a Vancouver Sun Reader's Choice Award, Los Angeles' Robby Award, NAACP Theater Award, and nominations for a Jessie Award and an Ovations Award. She also appeared on Broadway in "Sophisticated Ladies" where she understudied Judith Jamison and in the 1987 anniversary tour of "West Side Story" as Anita.

Valarie’s film appearances include "The Cotton Club," "Street Hunter" and "Glitter."

Valarie's made guest appearances in such tv shows as "The X-Files," "Walker Texas Ranger," "The Sentinel," "The West Wing," "The District" and "Frasier." She’s had recurring roles on "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" and "Fame LA." Valarie was a regular in the daytime drama "Another World" as Courtney Walker and "One Life To Live" as Sheila Price Gannon. She had a recurring role in the CBS series "The District" and she's a series regular in UPN's "Half &Half."

Valarie lives in Los Angeles with her husband Tony Radar.
