Vanessa Williams was born and raised in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn, New York. She began her theatrical training with the New York City Opera Children's Chorus at the age of 11. She later attended the High School for the Performing Arts in New York City.

Vanessa made her professional acting debut in the tv series "A Different World." She's made guest appearances on such shows as "The Cosby Show," "NYPD Blue" and "Malcolm & Eddie." Vanessa starred as Rhonda in the television series "Melrose Place" during its first season and she was a series regular portraying Maxine in the Showtime series "Soul Food" which was based on the 1997 film of the same name.

Vanessa made her feature film debut as Keisha in "New Jack City." She's gone on to appear in "Drop Squad," "Candyman" and "Punks."

Vanessa has also appeared on stage in "Sarafina!" and "Mule Bone."
