Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Johnson on November 13, 1949 in New York City. A distinguished comdienne and actress, Whoopi began performing at New York's Helena Rubinstein Children's Theater at the age of eight.
It was her one woman stage performance on Broadway in 1984 that brought her to the attention of director Steven Spielberg who cast her in the role of Celie in the film adaptation of Alice Walker's novel "The Color Purple." Whoopi won a Best Actress Golden Globe Award and was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award. In 1990 she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie "Ghost."
Whoopi's tv guest appearances include "Moonlighting," "A Different World," "Tales From The Crypt," "The Nanny" and "Strong Medicine." She had a recurring role in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and she starred in the NBC series "Whoopi."
Whoopi's other film roles include "Clara's Heart," "The Long Walk Home," "Soapdish," "Sarafina!," "Sister Act," "Ghosts Of Mississippi" and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back."
Whoopi has been active in the Comic Relief charity projects and has hosted the Academy Awards several times. She's also the creator and executive producer of the Lifetime tv series "Strong Medicine" and she was the producer of "Hollywood Squares" from 1998 through 2002.
Whoopi has one daughter and two grandchildren. She has been married 3 times and has dated such actors as Ted Danson and Frank Langella.
